GORP Employment Opportunities

The Georgia Outdoor Recreation Program - GORP - employs students for the jobs listed below.  A short summary of responsibilities, skills and qualifications follows each job title.  Interested students can fill out a job application in room 201 Ramsey Student Center for Physical Activities.  More information about each program and contract information for the professional staff member responsible for that program can be found on the individual pages of this website.

 

GORP Trip Leader : 

GORP trips are lead by student staff who plan and facilitate day and weekend activities.  Regular training is provided to new staff as well as veteran leaders.

Qualifications:

1.      Must have current certification:

A.    American Red Cross CPR

B.     American Red Cross First Aid

(Prefer Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder- all made available through Rec Sports)

2.      Must have prior experience in a particular outdoor adventure activity and technical skill to safely participate in that sport

3.      Must have a willingness and ability to teach those skills to others

4.      Must have organizational skills to plan a trip in advance, carry out all the logistics of preparing for departure and then facilitating a safe experience abiding by university policies and procedures

5.      Must have good communication and interpersonal skills to manage group dynamics out in the field and make good decisions to manage risks and respond to emergency situations

6.      Must be able to drive a 12 passenger van


Outdoor Recreation Center - ORC - Customer Service
 

During hours of operation there is a student assistant on duty to provide customer service to individuals wanting to rent camping equipment or utilize the resource information in the ORC. 

Qualifications:

1.      Must have current certification: (classes provided through Rec Sports)

a.       American Red Cross CPR

b.      American Red Cross First Aid

2.      Must have an interest in outdoor adventure activity  (Prefer some technical skill to safely participate in some outdoor activities)

3.      Must have good communication and interpersonal skills to provide correct information and good customer service

4.      Must have organizational skills to maintain university equipment and manage monies abiding by university policies and procedures

5.      Must be willing to handle big pieces of equipment for loading, cleaning and inventory management


Climbing Wall Supervisor and Instructor

Every hour the Climbing Wall and Bouldering Wall is open in the Ramsey Student Center for Physical Activities there is a supervisor on duty to make sure that all policies and procedures are followed and that equipment and facilities meet industry standards to create a safe, fun environment.

 

Instructors are responsible for providing the information and teaching the skills necessary to use the wall in the weekly Climbing Wall Clinics.  Employees typically serve in both capacities.

Qualifications: 

1.Must have current certification:

a.       American Red Cross CPR

2.American Red Cross First Aid (classes provided through Rec Sports)

3.Must be able to carry out the following skills competently:

b.      Fitting a harness

c.       Figure 8 knot

d.      Proper use of several belay devices

e.       Know how to answer important questions correctly on the general use of the climbing wall

f.       Ability to make decisions to manage risk and respond to emergency situations

g.      Assist staff with general maintenance of the facility - route setting and cleaning
